I am an old man who builds and races Chevy 409s. I just bought a 77 F150 460-C6 extended cab, long bed truck. I wanted a truck to pull car trailers and could not pass this old Ford up. Fantastic body on this truck. Will have to do much work. 4350series Motorcraft spreadbore carb was butchered by previous owner( left parts out) I have ordered adapter plate to convert to Carter-Edelbrock. I am very familiar with these carbs. I would like to put timing light on engine after I install new carb, but I have yet to find timing pointer!! Maybe some basic info from someone. ...30 min. ago I asked for help concerning bad brake booster, and have already recieved answer from this forum. Thanks for the help. Please dont hold my 409 history against me. My wife drives a Grand Marquis and I have a 94 Ranger "parts chaser" that I bought new.

I had the same trouble when I bought mine. The pointer is on the passenger side, just over the harmonic balancer. You might have to sand the balancer to see the timing mark...I had to. After you sand and identify the timing mark, fill it with a little white paint or white-out. It worked for me.
great choice of truck. i got my f-250 that pulled race cars for years for a team in town. If you need a new booster national parts depot would have one for about $40
good luck.
unlike most chevies, 460's have the degrees stamped on the balancer, and the pointer sticks over the balancer on the passenger side, or it should anyways....i just went outside and took a pic of mine, this is shot facing down on the balancer on the passenger side of the water pump...hope it helps....

I would like to thank all who have responded. I now have good guidance on where to buy and what to buy to repair the bad brake booster. Thanks to SwOkcOffroader, I now know my pointer is missing. An empty female boss on the timing cover in line with the balancer. Am waiting on carb. adapter to gofrom Motorcraft 4 bbl (4350) to Carter. I have a good Carter on a car I will use on the 460 to tune and make sure the motor is healthy. The previous owner had butchered the Motorcraft ( missin parts too) Would not idle under 1,500 rpms due to massive internal vaccuum leaks in carb. But the engine itself had no knocks and didnot smoke. It suffered terrible abuse. Air filter was 100% stopped up, had Ford part no. (original filter?) But thanks to you guys, I can make some progress.
You've got a good truck there. Stick with it and it'll make you proud. Understand though that the F-150 is the little truck. It will pull a trailer, just make sure for safety sake you don't overload it. I have pulled a car trailer with an estimated combined weight of 6500 pounds. It was the upper limit of what I would pull. Your truck should have more than enough power to move the load. My concern is with brakes and suspension. An F-250 or 350 would be a better tow rig if available. But if your trailer has good brakes, the tongue weight isn't too high and you can take your time, this truck may be good for your needs.
76supercab2, thanks for your opinion. This truck will be required to pull a total of 5,500 lbs. Will use a reciever hitch . I could not pass this truck up , because of exceptional body with no rust. Wished it had been F-250, but for $600 , I will make do. I expect to rebuild trans, and maybe lots more, but because of the low price I paid, it will be a good investment. The trailer I will pull will have brakes. so I think I will be safe. Thanks again.
