variable volume plenum

how does the variable volume plenum work on the new v10's and is it possible to put one on an older v10?

Think of it as a 4bbl carb. When you get your foot in the thottle, the "secondaries" open up allowing more air flow. I don't think it would work with non 3V heads.

The purpose of those butterflys in there is to keep the intake velocity high thus the cylinder filling high. Think of them as a thumb over a graden hose.

Low flow with the thumb over the end a bit makes the water flow faster (once past your thumb anyway). Full throttle: well you don't need no butterflys. Imagine trying to put your thumb over a firehose!

V10man gave a good example. I just wouldn't want you to think that they fed fuel too.

the above guys are correct as to what it's like. on newer motors by having a viriable runner length you can tune a motor better for low and high end.
use the longer runner you can increase low end, shorten it and top end is better.at top end it's like dumping the fuel air mix right down into the the valve pocket.
another item car companys are useing is a small factor that when a intake valve closed it made incoming air go back into the penulem almost like a very small supercharger . that back pressure from the closing valve force can be used by tuning to help charge the next cylinder by useing the harmonics of the valve charge pressure.
as to installing it on a older motor. no.it will not.as there is much more then just a intake to make it work. if you really want a 3 valve it would be best to trade up to a new one if possible.

With all the gear threads I see on FTE, it is an easier way to let people know "the truth".

thanks for the info guys. i was trying to figure out how good it would work with a turbo. i understand the whole tunning for power with runner length and with scavagening on the exhaust side. i had just never heard of a variable volume plenum. sounds like i need to start looking for a 3v enigne.
