Hey guys. This is my first post on the forum but I have been reading it for a long time, and all I can say is this is awesome!! You guys have probably answered this question before, but all of the tuners out there are confusing me.
First off, I have a early 99(man. date of 4/98) f-250 7.3 power stroke with the six speed tranny, KN air filter, and a modified MBRP exhaust. I am looking to give my truck some more ponies, but I can't decide how to go about it. What tuner has the lowest EGT's The edge evo is the cheapest out there and I have heard good things. The quadzilla 0-40-80 module is adjustable on the fly and it can also defuel on its own if the need arises, but I dont hear much about it. I read that most people run the predator on this site, but I have heard problems of removing the program. Most of the time, auto-tranny shifting is the main point of talk, but what about the manual tranny? I don't want to put a flip chip on my computer, so that is out of the question. What do you guys think? Any help would be much appreciated!!
i have had the predator and have had several experiences with the evo. my personal experience had shown that the predator both shifts better and has lower egts everytime and i still think it makes more power
i have the edge evolution and edje juice/attitude running in parallel. before i got the evolution, i could tow 6000# on setting three, and not see more than 1050* EGT. i tried pushing it harder, but it wouldnt go over 1050*. my guess is that the evolution will be similar. but before you do add power, you must have a set of gauges on there to monitor your engine. boost and exhaust temp will be fine for you.
I have heard the Evo can cause tranny problems. I have a friend with one in a 1997 and he had to send the Evo back to Edge to be updated because it was causing his tranny to slip very badly. I am sure this is probably an isolated incident, but just for your info.
I use the Diablo Predator. If you want any kind of diagnostic capabilities then IMO that is the one to get. It will monitor real time, it seems, about 30 different channels. Even cylinder contribution tests. For someone like me that might be too much information because now I know that #1 injector is a little weak.
The extra power is mind boggling especially on the 100HP tune.
I run with the Tow/Haul setting all the time, nothing higher than that unless I'm in the mood to smoke out everyone behind me. It makes plenty of power to accellorate onto the freeway. I also found that, with my stick shift, the throttle response is kind of twitchy on all the settings 60HP and up. So it's kind of hard to drive it in city traffic on any setting but the Tow/Haul.
Lately I am finding that my truck is behaving strangely on the higher settings. My plan is to get it to work and attach a fuel pressure guage to it with a long hose and go drive it. I need to measure fuel pressure at WOT on the higher settings. It comes on strong for two seconds and then all the smoke and some of the power goes away. It's acting like the fuel pump can't keep up with demand, but it also could simply be a software issue with the programmer. I need to know the numbers to know if I need to call Diablo or not.

Bowedup
You can damage the tranny with just the Edge/Attitude. The evolution will improve the shifts in the stock points. I have been running both for a while now and have had no problems to speak of.....other than loss of tread.
Am I correct in assuming that I do not need to worry about such things as tranny slippage and shift points since I have the manual 6-speed? kwikkordead, keep me know what you find out about your truck. Thanks for all of the help. So I am assuming that everyone would stay away from the quadzilla. What about the Bullydog power pup tuner? Anyone had any experiences with it?
nope, never had experience or have heard good comments about anything from Bullydog.
the ZF-6 6speed transmission is bulletproof. the only weak link is the clutch. i remember hearing Kwikkordead saying that on the 100hp tune, his clutch would slip. it is okay for a while, until you (maybe) burn a clutch. but when you upgrade clutches, you dont have to worry abbout any silly things like valve bodies and torque converters to replace or watch. beat the snot out of the transmission- it can handle it, as long as the clutch can.
don't forget to get gauges if you don't have them... you'll need to watch egts if you do a tuner or a chip... my predator can get them up real quick... but it makes HUGE power while doing it..!
I just went from a Bully Dog 4 position chip to a DP Tuner 4 pos. The DP is noticeably better. Better low to mid range torque and overall drivability. I also have a 1400rpm high idle on position 1 to warm up the truck in the morning.
I Do Not Know Much About The Edge Products Or About The Or About The Diablo Pruducts.
But I Have Run Two Other Different Programers Before (superchips And Hypertech ) I Can Tell You This.
The Dp-tunner Multi Positions Flip Chips That Jody Tipton Sells Really Rock. Jody's Burns Are Noted For Being The Coolest On Egt's From What I've Read And Experienced My Self. I Think From My Personal Experience That A Flip Chip Is Definetly The Way To Go. This Chip Is Great.
Why Would You Not Want To Put A Chip On Your Trucks Computer, Foxracer ???? The Conveince Of Changing The Settings On The Fly Are Great.... Plus Options Are Available And Usefull Such As Stock , High Idle , Ect. Ect..
Just my 2 cents here, I had a 01 lightning that had a stock motor and was some what happy with it's performance but I traded it in for a new 04 lighting,I went with LFP add on's... 18'' filter with the cool air intake kit, single blade throttle body and map sencer,a larger intake that was opened up, 4 pound lower pully, gator belt, electric duel fans, an oil seperator, there new longer spark plugs, and changed to Amsoil 5w20 and oil filter that has a relefe valve in it.. great for those cold start up's,I bought the Diablo predator and took it to speed INC in Roselle IL, for a dyno tune, no chip since it will not see any snow but if I lived in Florida instead of Chicago a 3 way chip would be great I rolled out of there a happy camper, 477 hp ATRW and 496 TQ all the way up to 5600 on 94 octane .... pure insane to drive and when I added a little 110 race gas to a full tank WOW!!! and now that the cold air is at 40, well all I can say is if I ease into the pedel it's like a back to the future ride, other then a 9 second altered dragster in the quater that I sold there's no other ride like it, and I have owned a few in my 54 years, well worth the $ spent and yes us old farts still have the need for power, life is good.
Get the guages first, I can't tell you how important they are!!!! The Edge Juice/Attitude in combination with the Evolution is a way strong package wesell lots of them every week here at DPPI. The cost is more but you get the gauges you need in the Attitude, you get on the fly power level selection, EGT safety defueling, and an easy to install systems that works extremely well on a 7.3. When you price the cost and installation efforts to do manual gauges, and add in the safety features of the Edge you can't beat it. Call us if you have any questions we'll be glad to help you.
