Engine ID problems
I just picked up a '63 Stepside with nothing original. I've ID'd the Tranny, a C-4, but am having some problem ID'ing the engine. Here is what I know...V-8 (I can count that high!), 6 bolt valve covers. Carb, intake and exhaust manifolds, as well as valve covers are not original. I dont see the raised bell housing ribs I'm told are indicative of a Windsor, but I cant find any casting marks either. The previous owner said it is a 289, but not a "normal one". He said when he went to replace the fuel pump, it didnt fit until they found one for a "Boss" engine. Suggestions? Oh, of course there are no tags to be found on the bell housing, the intake or near the coil. Thanks, Dan
The best truck show on earth. It is hard to tell what you might have there. The V8 that would have been in there (292 Y block) had 2 bolts through the middle of the valve covers if my recall is working. I forget which engine has 6 bolts in the vc.

Can anyone tell me where the casting marks are on the small block fords? I think its a 289/302/possibly even 351W(doubtful, but possible)...but would like to be sure before I get too far into it. First thing I need is a fuel pump, which is rather specific.
Thanks for your reply.
Dan
Check this thread out at the top of the list in the forum for the small blocks:
