I am having a very strange problem with my f150. I can't seem to get the truck to run properly! I have double checked the firing order. I start the truck and it idles ok but when I put the truck into gear it has no power. Now for the strange part when I change the firing order 7,4 the truck runs but backfires. Does anybody have any ideas.
I just changed the cap and rotor. would a coil cause this problem? I don't think I have any vacume leaks. It's just odd how when you switch the firing order it runs better.
When was the timing chain replaced in that motor? I am wondering if it didn't jump a tooth or maybe more. That would explain your loss of power and the backfiring.
I will check all the wires and plugs today. The truck was sitting for 5 years before I got it. It only has 70,000 origional miles on it. I have installed all new plugs, wires, cap, rotor and I have also installed a new carburetor.
How is the gas? You mentioned it sat for 5 years, did you remove the old gas before you added fresh? That will affect operation as well. Could be that gaskets in the carb dried out too.
What do the spark plugs look like now since they were installed (clean, sooty, fouled, etc...)? Take them out and see what they look like. Note any differences between them.
If you have not tried disconnecting and plugging all of the accessory vacuum lines and brake booster vacuum hose (if equipped) then you should. Just look for a change in the engine's performance even if the main problem turns out to be something else, a small vacuum leak does add to other bigger problems.
I double checked the plugs and wires and everything was fine. I did check all the vacumm lines to the carb. I unpluged all of them and don't notice any differance in the truck. The truck seems to run the same with none of the vacumm lines conected.

EGR valve stuck? Is there an air pump on the front of the engine that could be non-functional? Distributor bearings wore-out? Thermostat stuck? Little grey circuit board box on drivers side fender need to be replaced?
An air pump is cylindrical with a pulley on the front, it will have a belt on it just like an alternator, I think FORD mounted it under the alternator on the pass side, I think it is supposed to add air to the egr system to help better burn the recirculated crankcase vapors, I just took mine off as it wasn't working. If you have a charcoal emmissions canister, it might be plugged as well, again I just "deleted" mine from the system and the truck ran fine as well as passing our government AirCare testing - get this, I removed those 2 things and my exhaust emissions DROPPED!
My 1981 oldsmobile car HAD an emissions canister as well and it was always hard to start and I had to wait for 5 minutes before putting it in gear to make sure it wouldn't stall, well I "deleted" my emissions canister and that solved BOTH problems! as well as again I had LESS emissions during the AirCare testing
