I have a 2000 Ranger XLT 4x2, with a 4 cylinder engine. Small cab and box, nothing special.
I am told its the late 1999 model labeled as a 2000, and therefore follows the '99 manual. This being said the '99's don't remember the ABS codes. So the one time the light came on I couldn't get it read because the code was lost after I shut off the truck.
Very rarely I feel a light tapping from the ABS, but the light doesn't come on any more and my wheels lock up on the snow all the time lately. I know that the ABS isn't working thats for sure. Maybe a messed up sensor?
Also might I add that when I took it in to the shop to be looked at, they said nothing was wrong... But then why aren't they anti-locking I wonder!
Also, my truck when near the front and running, doesn't have the same quiet hum to the engine. There is a hitting sound like the fan is hitting something prehaps, but I have heard it on other cars before so must be a common thing. Perhaps thebelts? I do not know.
Any help would be great.

Had to replace a rear bearing and thought that would require removing the brake lines. That was a mistake, so I had to bleed the line a bit. I forgot to re-fill the resivour, so that was causing a problem with both the ABS & Brake light coming on periodically.
Another problem I had with my ABS was that the rear sensor was completely dead. Replaced that, and things seem much better now. The sensor was only about $8 or $9 from NAPA.
One problem remains. Usually after I hit about 20mph or if I use the ABS at all, the ABS light comes on and I have no ABS functionality. Until the light comes on, the ABS seems to work perfectly.
I have thought about getting it checked out, but the dealer wants 75 bucks just to hook it up to the diagnostics computer.
Hope some of that helps.
By the way, if anyone has any ideas on my issue (ABS light comes on around 20mph), please let me know. -Thanks.
I had a '95 with 2wd and just the rwabs, and it did the same thing. I don't think there's necessarily anything wrong, they will slide on snow or ice. If the light isn't on all the time, I wouldn't waste the money. Get some good snows like the Blizzak or Toyo Observe and see what it does. It won't be a waste of money.
