Newbie Question

Hi guys,
I am new to the forum. I recently had a guy give me an air blast sprayer for orchards, and wouldn't you know it, it appears to have a '60 292/ Holley 2bbl. in it. I found that out from this site, by finding the casting number on the block. Haven't found the head casting number yet. It's under all that crud, I'm sure.

I know nothing about the beast, only that it doesn't run. I've pulled spark plugs and shot Mystery Oil into the cylinders and pulled the valve covers. I don't hear bad things when I turn it over by hand.

It appears that 2 of the 16 pushrods are not perfectly centered in their respective chambers in the head. The rest appear o.k.

Should I be concerned with a bent pushrod here?

Would it be safe to spin the starter and start compression tests on each cylinder?

Can I evaluate timing chain, cam and crank without tearing it apart?

My goal is to get her running stock so I can spray my orchard once or twice a year.

Thanks for your adivce....

John, Welcome to FTE. It sounds like you're looking to get it running for cheap. I'd spray PB Blaster into the spark plug holes and let it soak for a day.

Change the oil filter. You don't want a clogged oil filter bypassing dirty oil because it will clog the top end oiling system. I'd pour a quart of diesel fuel into the crankcase. Then, with the spark plugs out of the engine, I'd crank the engine with the starter to spread it all around. Check for stuck valves. You should be able to rap the rocker over the valve to see if it moves. If a valve gets stuck, it might bend a pushrod. BTW, pour some STP or GM EOS lubricant over the rockers, too. It could save your cam and lifters.

Then spray some ether in the carb and try to start it.
