Getting used BW 1356
Howdy Folks! My transfer case is leaking pretty bad at the gasket. I'm going with a used unit for now because funds are low with X-mas coming. It's probably cheaper than replacing the gasket also. I've found one w/ 88k, about half what I have on mine right now, and hoping for the best. It's an electric shift with the flange. This should work w/ my '96 w/ electric shift right? When I was looking at rebuilt TC's I was told they would need the tag # from my T-case to make sure of compatability. Any help would be mucho appreciated! Thanks!

unless I am missing something critical its gotta be much easier to change the gasket than to chase the whole damn thing....
drain oil,
remove pan.
clean mating surfaces
refit pan with new gasket
fill with oil....
no?

Mucky-I agree that changing the seal would be a much cheaper alternative to a "leaky seal" depending on where it is of course. But where you missed it is this is his transfer case, not the tranny where a pan seal could be replaced. No pan/seal to replace on the transfer case.

ah bugger. sorry Blue, I didn't have the book with me so I must have been thinking of the transfer boxes on Land Rover Defenders. They have an inspection plate on the bottom that leaks.
I guess the BWs are split in the verticle plane so yes they would be a pain to leak-fix.
