boring out a 400
hi, i have a 400 engine and it is in bad shape so im going through it and decided i want to bore it out i think i wanna go 40 over but not sure anyone have some advice????? if i do then about how much would it cost alltogether to get the job done? thanks kevin

You need to talk to a local machine shop that will do the work. You can take it to them, and they may be able to guess how much it will need to be bored. If one of the cylinders happens to be damaged, you may not be able to save the block(rare cases). What I am saying is, you just don't know till you take it to somebody to measure it. When you get it bored, they will bore it the least amount required to clean up the cylinder. You want the wall as thick as possible. They will probably want you to order pistons before they get to far into the job. Pistons will vary a little bit, and they will size the bore to match the pistons you buy.

My local (Vancouver, WA) machine shop charged me $120 for boring my 400 +.020. I also had them hot tank it for $39 before it was bored.
