I had a problem with my 99 Ranger running rough. Thought I had it fixed with new plugs and wires. Ran good for a while now not so good. 3.0L, auto trans., 110,000. Was running good for a few days. Now the normal acceleration just isn't there from a stop. After about 50 mph any accelerations is pretty much gone unless going downhill. I can keep the speed constant after reaching it but it just doesn't want to get going. At about 50 mph my engine light starts blinking at me and after slowing down it goes out. Haven't had a chance to put a code reader on it yet since this started. Any guesses on where to start checking for a problem. After driving it smells a little hot, coolant level is good, catalytic converter glows red. I really don't know what to check.
Engine light blinking = codes, aand that's what we need to start with. How's the temp? VSS is normally the auto tranny problem causer, but let's start simple. You need to get them codes pulled and tell us what they are.
What did you put in for plugs and wires? Even though they're new you could still have be having a problems with them - the glowing red catalytic tells you you're dumping a very rich mixture out your exhaust.
Motorcraft plugs (can't remember the number but supposedly they're what is supposed to be in there, according to NAPA anyways) and I'm not sure what they called the wires exactly but those are also supposedly what Ford recommends.
