How do you get to the connectors for the 02 sensors. I have a 1998 5.0 Mountaineer. The connectors are above the transmission and the dual exhaust/cat pipes are in the way. The sensors are easy to remove, however I cannot get to the electrical connectors for the passenger side.
Any suggustions are welcome, I do not want to splice wires.
The connector harnesses have a "xmas tree" type pin holding them to a brkt. Slide your hand up pull the harness loose. You'll have more room to work on the connector.
Sounds like a great idea, however the problem is that I cannot even get close to the connector with my hand. I am about three inches away, it almost looks like I have to remove some exhaust pipes or go in from the inside through a metal access panel, but I really do not want to tear apart the interior.
I'm sure you've looked hard at this. The only way I could do the change was by removing the center console. Once the console is off, the job is very simple.
IIRC, you need to go easy taking the plastic parts off to get to the bolts. Once all the bolts are off, the console slides back to remove. It took a little pushing and pulling on the console to get it to slide.
Good luck.
PS: That metal access panel is a myth. Be prepared to remove the console and get on with it.

When the console is removed do you have access through the floorboard? Perhaps the metal plate "access panel" I saw from underneath the vehicleis actually the center console bottom plate. I was also thinking that by removing the skid plate under the transfer case I may be able to snake my arm up through to gain access. Did you try this method or am I just wasting my time?

Yes. Under the console is a heat shield that comes off. Then you'll easily be able to touch the O2 sensor plug.

I think that plate you see from underneath is covered be carpeting. So the console would still need to come off to get to it.

I did try many many other ways. I think some of the difficulties people face are due to the size of their arms. If you have an arm like Olive Oyl's it would really help in this process. Popeye like arms will not work.
I looked from underneath again, there is no way I will be able to get to the connector even removing the skid plate. I am going to remove the console.
How do you remove the console? It looks like the console tray holder and the cup holder will have to be removed to gain access to the mounting bolts. Is there any tricks to avoid breaking fragile plastic clips/parts? I do not have a manual that details this process.
I undersand the concept of sliding the entire console back to remove it from the rear clip.
Did your vehicle have the deluxe center console with radio controls and heating/AC vents?
Sorry, I've got to run and won't be back until Tuesday. I've got the Mountaineer console like yours. Do a search, you'll find info for console removal. Only hard part was removing the plastic slot (in front of the cup holders) on the console to access a couple of bolts. Four plastic prongs need to be popped out which hold it in. Go easy there. Good luck.
I have removed the cup holder and front tray with no problem. Removed 4 screws holding center console in. I cannot seem to move the whole console rearward, fear of breaking something may be getting in my way.
I sure appreciate the help so far, this forum rocks!
I will let you know the status when finished. Thanks for all your help.
The simple instructions for console removal are: take the cupholder and cubby out of the console, removed the 4 bolts (two connecting the front of the console to the dash and 2 connected to the floor), unplugged the wire harness, yanked the console back to the rear to release the bracket and placed it outside the truck.
Then pull the carpet back, remove the heat shield, and unplug the O2 sensor.
release, is to pull (and push it a little) it with a grip that is low to the carpet. It needs to clear a clip that is on the floor toward the rear of the console, by pulling it to the rear of the vehicle.
I ended up cutting the carpet under the console just enough to gain access to the screws and slip the heat shield out. The connector was right there, a piece of cake!
It is hard to commit to cutting carpet on something that looks so nice, however none of it will show when the console is re-installed.
I can only imagine how expensive it will be if I ever have to replace any one of the cats in this thing, all four are welded together including the muffler. It looks like the whole thing will have to be cut out. Hope it lasts for a good long time.
If you ever have to replace the cats, I would suggest getting Magnaflow cats. They run about $50 a piece from Summit. Another good cat is Catco. I removed the four cats and replaced them with two Magnaflows. Won't hurt anything...
