2002-2005 Models Tire Pressure

I've asked this question before but am still not clear. I have a 2003 Explorer Eddie Bauer 4WD V8 Model. My door sticker says Front 30psi/Rear 35psi. My old 1996 Explorer Limited V8 AWD was Front 30/Rear 30. I just came across a 2005 Explorer Limited V8 4WD model and looked at the Door sticker Front 35psi/Rear 35psi. This vehicle is basically identical to mine with the same size tires/wheel, engine, 4 wheel drive system. So the question is why does my door sticker say only 30psi on the front. I would think that expecially on a 4x4 of any kind you would want the same front and rear. Anyone else had a look at their door sticker lately? What's it say? I'm thinking I'm going to start putting 35psi in the front tires.

Ray, my 02 Explorer XLT 4WD 4.0L says 30/35. After all that back and forth about tire pressures on Explorers several years ago, I personally plan to stick with what the door sticker says. That's the authoritative source. If Ford puts it on the door that means they are willing to defend their position in a court of law since that's where any victim's family will go if they blame the accident on wrong tire pressures.

Just finished looking at about a dozen or so door stickers from 2002 to 2005 models. Here's what I found.

It doesn't matter what model you have XLT, EB, Limited. It doesn't seem to matter if it's a V8 or V6. Doesn't matter what 4x4 type you have or Rear End. Doesn't matter if you have 16 inch or 17 inch wheels. Doesn't matter what type of tow package you have either. All the door stickers either say Front 30/Rear 35 or Front 35/Rear 35.

He is the difference I found. Every 2002 model says 30/35.
Every 2003 model says 30/35. Then the 2004 model went to 35/35. Same for 2005. My EB is a late 2003 production model and still says 30/35. I looked at a 2004 that was one of the first built in 2003 and it says 35/35.

For some reason Ford decided that they wanted 35 in the front. The 2005 and 2004 are the same as the 2002 and 2003 models so I think I'm going to start putting 35 in the front too. I never did get why the difference of 5 psi, especially unloaded with no towing.

Thanks for all the other replies.

My '99 XLS with a 4.0L OHV (bought new with Firestones) showed 26psi all around on the door sticker; I got a new sticker in the mail that showed 32psi AFTER the tire recall fiasco. By then, I had swapped the Firestones for Michelins. Seems like Ford was going for ride comfort at the time rather than tire durability. Did 26psi contribute to the tire failures..........who knows?

Hmmm.... Interesting. My very early '03 says 30/35. I've always put 35 in both even though the sticker says different, because it just didn't seem to make sense to put less air in the tires with more weight most of the time. Seems I was correct, but now I'm wondering why the difference? Keep in mind that the 4X4's do use the front axle for power much of the time even when 4X4 isn't engaged, so with this the 35/35 makes more sense. Did any of the tires tread or rubber compound change even if they kept the old name?
