I was wondering how much weight can the tailgate hold when it is down?
I was wondering this because yesterday I had about 15 bags of mulch sitting on the tailgate waiting for me to come and unload them. I dont want to accidently put to much weight and boom and my tailgate crash down...
350#s is most likely rated weight. I've had 800#s with no problems but I didn't get on it myself at that point. I've also killed 3
Dont' know for sure but I have had my Cub Cadet 2185 with me on it in the bed of my truck and used ramps to get it down. I guess the total weight was 1,200+ lbs total.
I don't know how much the 04 will hold but I have loaded my ridding lawnmower with ramps ( mower [guessing 450 to 550 lbs]--me 325) no problems so far didn't even bend when I went up the ramps, gotta load it tomorrow you watch the dang thing will crash. LOL
I have some cables for locking stuff up that is "rated" 600#.
The tailgate cables are at least twice the diameter as those and there are two of them.
I'm sure 800# would be fine, probably lots more.
Perhaps the connections on the ends would give out before the actual cable broke or the post they mount to.
I would worry more about overloading the center of the tailgate and having it bow and pop off the hinges. The ramps are closer to the cables and there are two of them. If you tried to load a motorcycle dead center, you might be looking at a boomerang shaped tail gate. Its a shame how flimsy these truck are made now. I leaned on the side of the bed and almost popped it in. It took hitting a tree to move the side of my brothers 74 f100 in. Trucks were trucks back then.
True but back then we were all bitching that we only got 6mpg, we were constantly working on them and had no creature comforts in the truck. Look what we got now.
I, personally, don't need to bounce my trucks off trees these days. And even if I did, that is what they make Chevys for. They're disposable.
Regarding weight...
My 1989 F350's tailgate took a good amount of effort to swing it up and close it...
My 2003 F250 feels like it is made from aluminum....no effort at all....are they torsioned?? or just made of recycled Hondas?
