carb and timing

In an earlier post someone suggested advancing the timing to gain more power. I have a 1985 bronco II with the 2.9 that I really like but it's gutless. Timing spec is 10BTDC. How far can I advance it? And is there a performance chip that works well? I also need some carburator advice. With the cold weather, when you give it the gas, as the throttle opens it does that stall, sputter and then catch on thing that I think is due to not enough gas squirted in. It does it even after warming up and steppping down off the choke. I had an old truck that had two places to attach the throttle pump lever, one for summer one for winter which gave more pump in the winter. What can I do? Replace the jets? Get a bigger jet? Any suggestions?

Depending on the gas you can go 12, 14, maybe a little more, if it pings back it off a little.

I would check in our chip for or with our site sponser, motorhaven.com.

By the way you have the 2.8L. My 85 did the stall, studder catch on thing and it ended up being the vacuum line from the carb to the carb spacer. The hose looked fine but when I took it off I found a hole on the other side. Pull off all of your vacuum lines and visually inspect each one.
