Is there a way to keep the overdrive from automatic turning on when the engine starts. Its just annoying turning it off all the time. SInce the Escape starts in overdrive.
Thanks 3.0
I know exactly what he is asking. The default mode for the A/T is overdrive. When you first start up the the vehicle it is in the overdrive mode and you have to manually take it out of the overdrive mode. He is asking if there is a way you can start the car and the A/T NOT be in the overdrive mode. This makes good sense, first because of the annoyance of having to take the vehicle out of the overdrive mode (not overdrive itself, but the overdrive MODE, because the vehicle does not actually go into overdrive until you reach 40 or 45 mph).
The way it is set up should be reversed, the driver should HAVE to put the the trans in the overdrive mode when it is needed.
Second, you actually waste gas in the overdrive mode when driving in traffic at the 40 to 50 mph range and you sometimes go below 40 and then back up again to 45 or 50. The transmission is constantly shifting in and out of overdrive at these speeds, accerlerating at the low end of overdrive (40 mph) dumps fuel in your engine and you hardly go anywhere and the vehicle lugs.
To get the best fuel economy keep your vehicle OUT of overdrive until your speed will be a constant 55 mph or more..

I may have something wrong with my auto trans then. Because at around 40 or 45 accelerating and then slowing down to under 40 or 45, the vehicle shifts in and out of overdrive and lugs on accerlating because it is in 4th gear or overdrive. Manually taking it out of overdrive alleviates this condition and vehicle shifts and accelerates normally. My trans does NOT shift in and out of overdrive when conditions are right, the crucial 40 to 45 mph range the vehicle should not be in overdrive and lug on accerlation. I am going to have it checked out by Ford.
Its not OD that causes that 40 - 45 mph thing, its the torque converter locking and unlocking. Also considered to be normal by Ford even though it is annoying.
I have the same problem with my 2001 4.6l supercrew. I had the dealer check it out a year ago and the said nothing was wrong. If I turn the OD off then the engine doesn't jerk. Can the engine be recalibrated to shift at a higher speed or RPM?? It seems this would fix the problem. Is this a trans problem?

You can spend the bucks and buy a performance chip that can be tuned to shift at higher RPMs but I don't know if it would help your torque converter issue. Is this a tranny problem? Not at first but many people who have reported problems with the CD4E tranny usually had complaints about the torque converter "hunting" in that speed range a lot. Where I drive, 45mph is either way over or under the speed limit. Constant speed adjustments in the 40-45mph range will drive you nuts with the converter kicking in and out.
