86 ranger brakes

Front calipers have a two piece split shell type of caliper pin with some sort of rubber plug in the middle of it. How do you remove these pins?

You know it's midnight here...I hope you're not doing a brake job at midnight lol.

I'm pretty sure those are the pins you have to hammer out, then again I'm not real familiar with '86s. Hang around somebody will be here with a response before too long. Well it may be morning, but still...

I've got them on my 93' also. Here's what I do.

If you look at the end of the metal wedges you'll see a ramp/bump stamped in them. That keeps the 'pin' from sliding in or out by itself.

I take a drift punch, rest it on the edge of one of the metal leafs and whack it with a hammer such that it hits the leaf at a 45 deg angle TOWARDS the center of the pin. That serves to squeeze the leaf inward so that ramp clears the caliper (or mount) AND moves that leaf inward. Do the same with the other leaf. Once both are 'squeezed' together and their ramps are inside the slot you can keep tapping that pin all the way through.

Sorry that I don't know the correct lingo for these 'ramps' and pins but I hope you get the picture.

THX for info, I need to pull this caliper off and check it out , this right front brake is dragging, I pulled wheels to check wheel bearing Adj. and noticed this wheel drags, push on piston and seems to release and spin normal. this truck was not driven for about 3 yrs. I think caliper may be rusted to bracket where it should slide on. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated

Mine drag a bit too - much more than my passenger cars with different caliper mounting methods. I just thought it was the nature of this type of mount.

If the piston is free then just wire brushing the pin, the grooves the pin slides in and putting a thin finger wipe of hi-temp brake pin grease on them all should be the best you can do.

I'd reccomend checking the brake fluid as well, replacing it wouldn't be a bad idea as long as that truck has been setting, it won't hurt anything.

86 Ranger Brakes

Pulled caliper today, cleaned rust off of spindle bracket, greased between caliper and bracket, installed new pins, brake works as advertised. Hat Tip to RangerPilot and ProbeDude.
