Hello
I wanted to give you a picture of the patient.
This truck has the infamous speedometer wiggle I replaced the rear speed sensor and still have the wild speedo. I did a search on the gems box but, couldnt find any info on cost of the GEMS box or where it is on the truck. This is a 1995 f250 hd PSD, auto, 3.55 rear open diff with 180k on the clock. Any info would be appreciated
Mine is starting to do the same thing, haven't looked into it yet though. I figured it was the VSS going south, but maybe not. Have to do some digging.
When mine started doing that, it was just after I had the read end rebuilt by the local stealership. The VSS exciter gear (lots of small teeth) was worn down so that the teeth were all flat on top. I put in a new VSS & the stealership replaced the gear, all to no avail. Their diagnostic procedures indicate that the PSOM (programmable speedometer/odometer module) needs to be replaced, but since I was a bit shy of the $660 that they wanted, I held off the replacement. Cruise doesn't work too well, but I managed to not get any tickets, even with a shaky speedo.
Since the PCM uses the speed signal as part of the gear selecting process, it's quite possible that the two problems will be cured by the same fix. Problem is that I'm not sure what the "fix" will be in your case.
