Harely Grill Swap

I've got mine - a simple swap that looks great. I didn't take the time to replace the surround but will at some point. I assume the surround is just clipped/screwed on but didn't really look. Anyone here already swap the surround?

removing grill surround?

OK, I took a look at my original grill assembly. To anyone who has done it, how do you get the surround off without breaking it? It looks like the surround is held to the grill with a series of clips but I can't see how you can get the clips open without breaking them or otherwise ruining the clip.

txFx4x4,

Did you ever figure out how to remove the grill surround?

I found an all chrome replacement grill on Ebay for my 05 SCREW. The honeycomb and the bezel are both chrome. Drastic improvement over stock grille.

removing grill surround

I have looked at my original assembly closely and the surround is attached to the inner grill portion by a series of one-way clips. It does not appear possible to remove the surround without breaking the clips and/or the plastic retainers holding the clips. That wouldn't be a problem except the same is true with the Harley grill. I believe you could remove the surround without regard to the clips/retainers and reattach the surround using some type of epoxy effectively gluing the surround to the grill. Alternatively, you could probably come up with a way to attach the grill with screws. I have not attempted either of these as of yet but may at some point. BTW, I have a dark shadow gray FX4 with which the gloss black surround is not particularly attractive.

All you need to do is get a small pair of needle nose pliers and gently bend the plastic tabs on the grille part of the assembly to allow the surround to seperate from the grille. It's OK if you break a couple because you can use some double-sided trim tape to bond the 2 pieces together where the tabs may have broken off. Just make sure that you bend the tabs back before putting the assembly together.
