Drove my wifes Explorer today ( 97 model) and there was minnimal heat coming out the vents. I turn the heat selector from hot to cold and I get pure cold air, turn it back to hot and the air warms up but not like it should be. I figured I had the wonderful blend door problem, I could tell a definete difrence in temp from hot to cold so can I assume the blend door is working? Does a heater core go bad without leaking? All the heater cores I have replaced I replaced because of leaks. Could the thermostat be stuck open not letting the engine warm up enough? The explorer has the 5.0. Any thoughts would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Jeff
Could be the blend door is broken and hanging up before full heat. But check the easy stuff first-coolant level, t-stat, heater control valve. If you haven't replaced these things since you got the truck it won't hurt to do it now. Then think heater core-flush thru from both sides. Then I'd think blend door actuator motor and blend door.
Like vivc sez it could be lots of things. Is the temp gauge running where it always has? Are the heater hoses too hot to handle? If not is the heat valve in the hose working.
Thanks for the info everyone. It was the tstat, I pulled the housing and the tsat was in 3 pieces. I intended to replace it and the hoses and belt when I bought the explorer a few months ago just never had time. Now the wifes winter beater is ready to go.
