Plug in time

I have the stock block heater and an aftermarket 150 watt adhesive pan heater on the oil and tranny pans. Should i put them on a timer? Is 12 hours too long to plug in? I live in Alaska and it gets pretty cold sometimes, as low as -30 F. Thanks.

I all depends on the temp your vehicle is in. at zero probably 4 hrs. -30 24 hrs if outside and not in a protected place (like a garage) I start plugging in at 20 for an hour and the colder it gets the longer I put the timer on for. Also for you get a real lightweight oil reccommended for the truck. I use a 10W30 ci4 rated for diesel. You should go even lighter 5w30 - comes to mind.

I'd recommend installing a battery blanket/heater as well. All those heaters won't do you much good if your battery isn't able to crank it over...especially at -30.

I have had mine in -15 weather before and no problems starting without any heaters plugged in.
