My nephew from out of town is here in his new to him '97 Ranger, single cab, manual trans, 2wd. His fuel guage doesn't work, is there a quick way for me to test it for him so that I can give him an idea of what might be wrong?
Check the ground for the pump/sender on the fuel tank. Should be near the pump on the frame rail. Does the in tank fuel pump work? Probably a stuck float. Expensive to fix though.
There's a way to shock the system basically and send the gauge to fuel, but I'm not sure how and don't wanna send you randomly off. Try a search of the Ranger forum and see what pops up.
Mine wasn't working also. It was the float and the gas line from the intank pump to the outlet was melted. I removed the bed and gas tank pump assembly. The float measures 2 inches long by 1 1/4 inches in diameter with a groove for the clip about a 1/4 inch away from one end.
I went to Claremont Ford and bought the float pn: coaz-9202-B Float A 105131 BIN: UB002D, for $8.23 and then went to Autozone to buy the hose for $1.07. It is easier to remove the bed (6 bolts) than it is to lower the tank. I've read that the straps rust to the tank so if you lower it you need a new tank. This can be done in about an hour but with the running and research actually took half a day. Good luck !
