My 2000 4dr 4x4 Ranger recenlty hit 100,000 miles, and now I am having major problems with the 4x4. I have taken it in and the problem could not be figured out. I personally replaced all electronics on the truck that work the 4x4 and it still his having problems. The 4x4 light constantly blinks while I am driving it, it seems to flash 6 times and there is approximately ten minute pause bewteen the 6 flashes. It is very wierd because I have gotten it to work a couple times and it seems to work fine. If you know what might be going on please post suggestions!

…..See you on the boards.
you need to go and get the codes pulled so we can help you.
Yep, Autozone will usually do it for free, as will most other auto shops. You can do it yourself with a code reader. Bring us the codes and we can work from there. Something like this should most definetly pop a code.
I was wondering how you came out on this, because you described exactly what my 2000 Ranger is doing. I was thinking about cleaning my battery terminals even though they don't appear to need it, because I was thinking that I might not be getting enough voltage to allow the system to engage. All other electrical equipment is operating fine. The only other thing that my truck has been doing, is the ABS light popped on one time after messing with the 4X4 switch, but was not lit after shutting the truck off and restarting.
Would my transfer case still not engage if there is an issue with the hubs? I'm not sure so that's why I'm asking. Also, can you tell me how to check to see if I have the PVH hubs? I've printed out the technical papers on the hubs, but haven't looked through them yet. It doesn't even seem like the truck wants to engage the transfer case. You can hear clicking 3 or 4 times behind the dash whenever you turn the dial, but then nothing happens. A few seconds after that it will begin flashing the 4X4 high and 4X4 low lights (both flash at same time) about 6 times and then quit, only to flash again a few minutes later. I've tried tapping on the motor on the transfer case to try to free it should it be locked up, but with no success. Also, the 4X4 is used very little on this truck as sees mostly highway use. Thanks.
Pull off a front wheel and look at the hub, there has to be a pic of the PVH hub on here somewhere to compare, or
See if you can rotate the front axle shaft with your hand whith the truck stopped (in park, lets not run ourselves over) in 2wd, then 4wd. With the more recent system you will not (I think) be able to turn it in either since it is always engaged and 2wd/4wd is only controlled by the TC. With PVH, you should be able to turn the shaft easily in 2wd but not in 4wd.
I think that should tell you but no promises...
A code (light) seems to be more likely a TC issue than a hub issue anyway.
I decided to get a new 4x4 motor that worked great and when I put it on the truck it still wouldn't engage. So just for the heck of it I looked at my battery terminals and noticed corosion on the positive. I cleaned off the terminals and the battery posts and it works perefect everytime. Wierd! Wish I would have done this before changing everything. So if you have a problem similar to mine first thing is to check out your battery terminals!
when you take off the wheel you will see the hub. In mid- 2000 they got rid of the hub, so if you don't see one then you have a newer style and don't have hubs. Your problem could be your 4x4 motor is dead, it can happen from little use. But hey first thing check your battery posts, it fixed my problem.
Cleaning the battery terminals didn't help, but I guess it was worth a try. I'll wait until I'm able to be without the truck for a day or two and I'll see if I can pull that motor off of the transfer case and either clean up the contacts and get it to work or get a new motor. Am I correct in assuming that if I'm not getting the correct light on the dash that my transfer case is not engaging and thus leads me to a problem with the motor on the transfer case? Thanks.

I have a 98 ranger that the 4x4 hi and low lights would flash on and off 6 times wait a while and flash 6 times again. I pulled the transfer case motor off and found the connector between the gear that switchs between 2wd and 4wd and the contacts that send the signal back to tell the computer what position it is in broke in two. So I am going to have to replace the transfer case motor. I will try to write back later to let you know if it helped. Good luck to you.
