could somebody help me out. I just bought a 1986 F-150 and the box is beyond repair. I'm looking to either get a replacement box or build a wooden flat bed. Any ideas?
ebay, car-parts.com, and various other sources should be able to help you out. There are many good truck beds of your vintage (which BTW, up to 96 will bolt right on).
If you want to make a flatbed, I'd recommend building the frame out of steel, then making the sides, and the floor out of wood if you want to do the wood thing. I've seen beds made of pressure treated wood before, but I personally wouldn't feel comfortable driving around something made of wood, with all the road salt that's scattered everywhere during the winter. If you live in Texas, obviously road salt is less of an issue, as compared to say, living in Buffalo NY.
In Rural Alberta, Canada, home of snow and ice, we use copious amounts of salt and gravel on the roadways to keep traffic moving. If you don't wash your vehicle on a regular basis it turns white with the salt crud. This in turn tends to attract free range cattle who look upon your vehicle as a giant salt-lick. This in turn results in missing cattle and tasty steak BBQ's. SEE, it all works out somehow!
