OK, I know I am not supposed to ask CHEVROLET questions here. but don't know where else to look. Anyway, my mother in law has a 1996 Chevrolet 1500 conversion van. There is a little black box between the battery + terminal and the battery cable. There is a yellow button on the little black box. Wife tried to start the van today and nothing happened, no start, no lights, nothing. I went over and the van started right up the first time. After looking around a bit, decided to try it again and nothing as before. Fooled around under the hood and pushed the yellow button, lights started working and van starts. The button can be pushed in and also rotated from off to on. What is happening? What is this thing? They want to drive out of town to go shopping tomorrow (imagine that). Should they take the van? I showed my wife how to push the button. Thanks, John
The little box you are refering to is a battery disconnect with overload protection. Most of the top of the line conversions have them. I however would be concerned about why it is tripping. Something in the system is overloaded or shorted. They will also trip if jump starting and too many amps pass through the system or if either of the jumper batteries are hooked up backwards.
Dirty battery terminals or grounds will cause it to trip.also chk within the van that something is not plugeged in that is drawing amps when trying to start.tv /vcr or some accessories .
