Skinnier is always better for the snow. 285's are pretty wide. I run 235's on my truck and it's great in the snow, the few times I've actually been able to use it.

The tires should be OK, the key is to pretend there's an egg between your foot and the gas pedal. Ditto the brakes. With a heavy foot, 4WD can get you in as much trouble as it can get you out of.
