Hey all,
I have a 99 Reg Cab with a V10. Right now I get about 12 mpg around town and about 14 on the highway - with the way I drive, that's pretty good. Anyhow, I have the stock intake with a K&N air filter on it right now and I was wondering if an aftermarket intake will increase power for the engine. If I put an intake on it, do I have to put a better exhaust system on it then? Is an intake worth the price or is the stock intake fine to run.
I don't think there are any aftermarket "intakes" - maybe you're talking about intake tubes or fresh-air kit?
The stock intake generates all that good torque you have... an aftermarket (if it existed) would only move the power band up in the RPM range, I'd think.
Happy Thankgiving!
Yea, I was talking about fresh-air kits. I know that on my brother's diesel, it was a big help...but that's a diesel. I was wondering about the benefits of a fresh-air kit on a V10 - if there are any. They are somewhat expensive and if they are just going to drop my mpg or not increase my hp that much, then I wouldn't get one. Do they help the V10?
I'd say don't waste your money. Banks for example only changes the front snorkle part in their kit. On my 99, I cut off the snorkle and added a 4" pineapple juice can to it and cut a larger hole into the grill support. Did it help?? I dunno.
I just installed a K&N system on my 99 and noticed a little gain. It seems to be a little smoother power too. It definately sounds better when I punch it . I would'nt say its the best power for the money though.
Studenut65...I think you ask a good question. Most Air intake systems will add more hp...but that is not usually the case at a reasonable RPM range. Thus, your fuel mileage would suffer. They make the power at high RPM's...
I have seen many FTE folks use the Volant system on there V10's. These systems appear to work...and look cool at the same time.
If you are only going to add an air intake system (No HyperTech etc.), then it is really not necessary to change out the exhaust. It certainly would not hurt...if you changed the exhaust to a free flowing system, but for your needs...that is a $$$ decision.
I'd have to agree with capchas on this one. The intake tract on the V10 is pretty smooth, relatively short and straight. I don't think you'd get much more useable power with the intake kit.
I'd do the y pipe and maybe a free flowing muffler. Don't worry about a whole cat back system, other than the muffler the stock exhaust is pretty well setup. Minus the y-pipe of course.
The y-pipe and muffler would probably be around the same price as the intake kit, if not cheaper.
If you go with a new intake tube, you still have the stock throttle body and MAFS. I changed both of those, and it did make a difference. So did the headers.
Thanks guys for all the info and ideas. I think I will hold off on intakes for now, but with a new exhaust in the plans, I will look at that y-pipe. Have a Happy Holiday Season and, if you live in the North, enjoy driving your trucks in the snow Thanks again, Nate.
Not sure if you've crawled under the truck and had a look at the y-pipe, but here is a Stan's y-pipe compared to a stocker. The stocker is the bottom one. The Stan's y-pipe only ran about $65 to have fabbed up. This was a pic posted by another member here.
