i've just been starting to see this problem to pop up. its getting pretty chilly here, so im starting to cruise around with the heat on. after the vent heats up, i usually keep it on 'floor low' for the remainder of the ride. but anyway, for some reason, my cd stock cd player is getting hot. if you put your hand in front of the part where you insert the cd, you can feel the heat coming out. then when you eject the cd, the cd is burning hot. ive never experienced this problem before with the cd player. its just a new thing. also, once the cd gets hot, it starts to skip really badly. mind you, the cd player heats up after about only an hour of driving, not even. i was just wondering if anyone has ever heard of this and wanted to see if it a problem that can be fixed. thanks in advance.
Hmm that is a problem. If you're under warranty, take it to the stealership and see if they can solve it. If not, pull the radio and see if perhaps a hose or air duct in the dash has come undone and is allowing hot air to circulate up there. It definetly shouldn't. Are all your floor vents clear, nothing blocking or deflecting the air? All else fails you may have to fabricate some sorta heat sheild, though it definetly shouldn't do that.
I have seen this problem on alot of factory head units... problem is that they dont put a big enough cooling fan in them to save money... only thing you can do is change head units or wire up a small fan to go behind it and blow the air away from the unit... requires small customization but you can make a small air duct with some hose and a small 12 volt fan from radio shack wire it into the head units ignition power source and it will turn on when head unti comes on... bes thing to do it get a head unit compatible with your 6 cd changer... check www.crutchfield.com and they can tellyou what is compatible...
The stock unit does run hot. The entire left side of the unit is a piece of 1/8" or so flat aluminum plate used as a heatsink for the onboard amp. It runs bloody hot to the touch after a few minutes. I think I noticed my cd player starts to skip a bit more frequently if I'm parked and have played it for an hour or so like you're experiencing.
I've been tempted to bolt on a finned heatsink to the side to increase surface area, but the problem is getting the unit to fit back into the dash
