Question about my Transfer Case

First off I have a 95 F-150 with the 351, E4OD, and Borg Warner Transfer case. Not sure if I should be concerned since my 4 wheel drive still works, but about a month ago I was driving down the road with a few passengers, and one of them apparently accidentally kicked the shifter back into 4 HI, without the front hubs locked in. I was driving about 55 when it happened, and when I slowed down for a stop sign, I heard a faint grinding noise and then a "clunk" which was the sound of it all locking in.

I've used the 4 wheel drive since in a few mud pits without a problem, but with winter knockin on the door, I'm not sure if I should check it all out. I'd surely hate to need 4 wheel drive and not have it...

I'd say if you can shift through all the positions and the TC works fine in each - while operating you don't hear any funny noises or what not - what else can ya do except open it up? I'd say run it if it's working ok...

Whenever I have done something like that, I just change the fluid, suck the last of the fluid out of the bottom of the case with a pump, fill it back up, and be done with it. You really are not going to do much if any damage using a chain driven case.

Is my transfer case chain or gear driven?
