i have a 86 ranger with a 2.3L and a 5-speed and are interested in swapping a 4 liter in. i have heard that with a 2.9 v-6 that the tranny will bolt right up to teh 4.0l. i was wondering is it would be the same thing with the 2.3. will the tranny from the 2.3 bolt up to the 4.0l. any advice would be helpfull. also what kinda mpg would i get with the 4.0 in my ranger
MPG on a 4.0L? Not easy to tell. It depends on driver habits, tranny condition, axle gears, engine condition, accessory condition, younameit. See the issue in guessing for you?
If your truck is carbed, I would almost recommend the 302 swap, if you are uncomfortable with swapping to EFI, since the 4.0L CAN NOT be had with a carb in any way shape or form.
Yep 2.9L V6 tranny will bolt right on the back of the 4.0L, the 4.0L is just a stroked 2.9L with other minor things.
Fuel efficiency won't be awesome, but it's not a gas guzzler by any means. And with the price of gas falling, why not?
The tranny you have is the same tranny as you will be placing in there. You might be able to have a bellhousing made for it or jack one off a junkyard wreck. If not, you could probably negotiate some sort of trade for the M5OD with the 4.0L bolt pattern for your 2.3L bolt pattern M5OD.
