Question Backspacing for 20 inch rims for a 04

I bought some 20x8 centerline stingray III from centerline for 149 a wheel. They told me they would not stick out of the fender at all. Well today i took them to Les Schwabe to have some 275-55-20 Pirrelli Scorpion ATR on them and well they stick out of the fender nearly 2 inches. My wheels have a 5 inch backspacing, now i am confused on what i need for a back spacing. I wish i had my camera to take pictures. I know a lot of people on here have after market rims and someone has to be able to help me out.

Stock wheels are 7.5". Your wheels are 8". Stock wheels have 5.5" backspacking. Your wheels have 5" backspacing and will stick out .5" futher than a stock wheel. The larger tires will stick out further as well. I bought wheels from centerline with 4.5" backspacing so mine are going to stick out about 1" farther than yours do.

Won't it be an inch more? .5" wider with .5" less backspacing?

Yes, you are correct. Plus the bigger tires will add additional width.

Okay, just checking. I'm getting new wheels soon and wanted to make sure I understand all the terms correctly.

So if I traded these wheels for another set of 20x8s with a 6 inch back spacing do you think i will be fine. By the way my truck is a 4x2, just want to make sure all this will look right.
