Take this with a grain of salt because I am strictly a DIY amateur.

I sprayed my first epoxy (Dupont) last month, also with a new HVLP gun I purchased. This is unlike any other primer I have ever sprayed. Dupont epoxy/sealer was to be mixed 2:1 with its activator - nothing more. I put up some cardboard sheets to practice and dial in the gun. I was frankly shocked at how thick the epoxy came out - it was almost like spraying texture on wallboard. I called the paint store and asked if any reducer was required. The response was "no, just use 2:1 as mixed and that it does come out heavy but not worry, it will settle and even out on the car." So I sprayed and waited. It did even out some, but it never settled out completely even and left a considerable "orange peel" texture. It was labeled as 'non sandable' primer, so I was not sure if it could be sanded and didn't have the luxury of time to find out. It does go on easily, covers nicely and does fill lots of minor imperfections. I would try it again but I would first like more information and tips from the pros on this forum regarding how to best apply the epoxy primer.

PPG's Epoxy primer can be used as either a sealer or a bare metal primer. It's most common use is a bare metal primer at a ratio of 2 parts DP to 1 part DP401 or 402 depending on dry time. You can add reducer to use it as a sealer but its not recommended if coating bare metal. As far as texture, it shouldn't be that bad. Not to say its the most smooth product out there, but it definately shouldn't go on like house texture. A lot of that could be in the air pressure, fan width, and distance too. Usually you will want your pressure to be what the gun recommends. Don't go by what the product sheets say. We sell guns that spray best at 18 psi, and some that spray best at 35 psi. Besides, if you have an HVLP the sheets almost always say to spray at 8-10 psi at the cap, and there's no way a DIY'er will have a way to measure pressure at the cap. Your fan should be at least 3/4 of the way open, and distance from the panel is usually about 7-10 inches depending on preference. This can change how peel comes out. Good luck guys.
