Hello,
I just wanted to make a small comment about my 1994 F-150XL. The 92-96,97 in bigger trucks, are the last of the great Fords. My 94 is the greatest vehicle I will ever own. In 126,000 miles, one waterpump and one set of front brake pads. It is a shame that same standard of simplicity and quality is not being built today by anyone.
I totally agree The 96 F-150 was the last 'real' truck
I still remember how disappointed I was when I first saw the new 97 (Taurus with a cargo box). I was so excited at the time before, I had such high expectations.
Dad had a 96 F150 w/5.0 and the E4OD. Dang that was a good truck. Then some guy pulled out in front of him and it got wrecked. Insurance company insisted on repairing it and it never held an alignment again so he traded it for a 98 F150. No trouble yet, and he is at 120k miles. 5.4 sure beats the 5.0 in the power department, but sucks down more fuel too.
Personally the 04 was the biggest step down. 97-03 are OK, but not as tough as the 92-96.
I was going to move up to the '05 F250 Supercab after my last cross country drive, but outside of the paint fading and the seat is showing wear...dang the son of a gun still gets over 15 MPG, doesn't use oil, always starts. If I had to drive cross country again (and those were 900 miles/day), all I would do is a tuneup, change the oil, rotate and balance the tires and look really close at the belt and hoses. It just might be the best vehicle I ever owned...Anyway. I find it hard to justify 30K+ just for the new car appeal when this baby just keeps running, and running, and running, and....

Can you tell I love my 95 Eddie Bauer, 5.0, 5 speed, 355 rear (wish it had the bigger cab).
totally agreeing with y'all here. my current truck is my second one from the 87-91 genre and i just love it! i can't justify spending $30K+ on a brand new truck that i'll be afraid to use as a truck when i can get a perfectly good older model for $5K or less all day long. i spent $4K out the door on my 89 F250 351W, and it's in beautiful shape but has a few character dents and scratches here and there. i'm not saying i'm gonna beat the snot out of it, but it's nice to know that if i DO put a lil ding in it here and there, it's not THAT big of a deal.
These trucks have their classic good looks. And their classic vent windows and square corners--but still have front disk brakes and gas tanks outside of the cab and fuel injection and gas mileage ratings that are the same as the new trucks for the most part.
I originally thought of getting a 58 thru 63 Ford pickup--but this genre of 87 thru 96 won me over. They are the best combination of old and new pickups.
