Well i have had my truck for about 9 months now, and ever since i have had it the Door never stays consistently shut. I know the is closed but the little light says its still ajar. Then i will be driving and the lights will flicker and the door ajar light will go off. Or sometimes it will just turn off with out and light flickering. I usually have to step on the brake alot for the light to turn off. It doesnt do this everytime but it still does it enough to be annoying. And lately my truck has been doing it alot i cant figure out what is going on? Has anyone had this problem before?
The door switch is intergral to the latch mechansim inside the door frame.
Try spraying some WD40 into the latch to (hopefully) resolve the problem.
It worked on an Expy we used to own.

From what I have researched on this site, the switches in the latch assembly get crudded up from road dirt, water running down the windows etc.. The WD40 did not fix mine, plus, that being petroleum based, may attract more crud in the future. So you may want to use a electric parts type cleaner. Needless to say, I replaced both my switches without any luck. From this site, I have been told there is a module behind the fuse panel that is my next attempt. Use the forum search and you will find many, many threads on this subject. Let me know how you wind up fixing it. lol
I have the same problem with my 98 4.2. It's really bad at night when the dome light doesn't go off and you can't see the road. I just removed my bulb the only problem now is the annoying "ding" sound.
The procedure below worked for me on my 98 Sable that had both dome light, and door ajar light displayed on the dash. I sprayed all 4 doors and the problem was fixed within minutes. It's been over a year now and no symptoms.

"This procedure is a solution to the dome lights not shutting off when the car’s doors are closed. I know for sure that this will work on any vehicle that has the dome light switch as an integral part of the door latch.
If your dome light does not shut off when you close the door, simply use a can of WD40, with the thin nozzle attached. Insert the thin nozzle into the lock cylinder and spray generously, then insert the nozzle into the latch mechanism and spray.
Our Taurus, a 1997 GL, has had this problem since we bought it in 1999, and I spray the lock and latch every time I change the oil, as a preventative measure. It works great, as the only permanent solution is to replace the latch mechanism
