Does any one out there know what the timing degrees on a 77 Ford truck with a 400? I need lots of help this is the 2nd time it has shut down on me, any info would be greatly appreciated.
Mr Horsemonkey, the timing is marked on a tune-up sticker on the driver's side valve cover. If the sticker is missing, it will be either 6 or 8* btdc, if it is a manual tranny, and 10* btdc if an automatic.
If it is quitting on you though, I would suspect either the ignition module mounted on the fenderwell, or the pick-up coil inside the distributor being bad.
Give us some more symptoms. Maybe someone can figure it out.
If you don't have an engine decal, which is where ALL the reference books point to.
Try it at 8*BTC and then do the ping>no Ping adjustment.
Just nake sure the vacuum advance hose is disconnected & plugged.
In neutral,RPM at 750.

Do you know if this would stand true for a '78 460. The truck doesnt have a sticker and the motor has been changed.I have one more question for you !! After the motor has been timed to the mark 8 degrees everything looks good. Now after reattaching the vacume advance line and reving the motor to lets say 2500 rpm, should the mark stay steady or will it go moveing all over the place ??
