TFI connector

I've finished putting a new distributor and oil pump in a 1985 300 4spd, and when I was plugging in the connector to the distributor mounted TFI I noticed that one of the wires on the plug (on the wiring harness) had the insulation burnt off, back about 2 inches.
1. Is there a source of new a new male plug- from the harness?
2. What would have burnt the insulation back - obviously heat, but should I be replacing something else that I'm not thinking of?
3. I've haven't found the condensor (capacitor) in Autozone or Schucks (in stock) IS there a common cross reference I could use for it?

Yes, insulation on those trucks fail by heat and oil. You can just put some insulation tape, OR get a used almost new conector from any junk yard from any F150 up to 1991, it does include the gray shorting bar for SPOUT signal.

You can use any similar capacitor like used on your alternator voltaje regulator, even no capacitor is not a big deal. I have more than 2 years running with no capacitor, this is just to reduce Electromagnetic noise than can affect your radio tuner.

A connector that makes a poor connection can overheat and burn the insulation off the wires. Sometimes it is enough just to go in and clean the connections - there should be some evidence of a poor connection if this is the problem. If so, I would replace it.

Thanks for the great information. I'll clean the connector and coat the exposed wire with paint on insulation. I'm putting off the junk yard run until I get a chance to get the Duraspark 2 and a vacuum advance 2 barrel carburetor. Are there any two barrel carbs that bolt to the stock intake or do I have to get some sort of adaptor plate. My goal in all of this is a slight power increase but most important is that I would like to have a vacuum advance so that I can see it and understand it. I make my living doing computer support for a hospital chain on the west coast, and the fewer electronics - especially computers- in my truck the better in my opinion.
