Can someone tell me or send me a picture of how the big rig style mirror brackets get attached to the truck? Do the mounting brackets just get screwed to the door or should there already be holes drilled and tapped in the door?
Also does anyone have a set of mirror w/w/o brackets that they want to get rid of?
On the older trucks the top bracket had thru bolts in the top of the door flange, and just hex head sheet metal screws in the door below the window. Some used a threaded insert in the door. If I were mounting them from scratch, I'd use the threaded inserts. You can get the tool and a supply of the inserts from Harbor Freight pretty reasonable. Use the 1/4 20 size, they go in just like pop rivets.....
My truck came with aluminum 'west coast' style mirrors on the doors. I originally thought they were oem, but after seeing them in a box at the JC Whitney warehouse, figured out they were attached by the PO.
Anyway, they attach to the door with 4 screws. Aside from some of the chrome hardware turning rusty, they aren't a bad mirror. You can see them on my web site. I'm taking them off and putting the stock mirrors back on it.
If you find brackets for the oem style, I know someone who has some NOS mirror heads for them.
I bought those same mirrors as ddavidv. About 50$ for the set. PO had used a set of 80's style square mirrors (think they still show in my avatar pic), so I already had 1 set of holes in the door panel. I too got a bit of rust around the bracket threads - I wonder if a little clear paint on the threads after asssembly would have stopped that - didn't think of it at the time.
The top of the door has "T" bolts that go from the back side out. Hardware number 383100-S( avail from Ford), nut was 34162-S( also avail). The lower part had inserts in the door, number 376903-s(avail from Ford) and screw 50730-s(obsolete).
