Help With ECT Sending Unit

I just bought my first Diesel truck and I am trying to work out some bugs with it. The factory coolant gauge doesn't work and I am trying to trouble it because the last owner installed a mechanical gauge and it looks awful.

The mechanical gauge threaded into the block right next to the thermostat housing. But on the links I have found on this forum ( http://www.nav-international.com.br/...rStroke/hs.asp )diagrams show that it should be located above the water pump on the engine front cover, and another one on the side of the motor. Is my 1995 F-250 7.3 Liter DI supposed to have two sending units, or three, or one???? Please help, I am lost on this one. Thanks for any help I recieve. - Peter

I can't believe that someone hasn't chimed in. I think there is only one above the water pump or just on top of the water pump.

i'll take a stab....

both mine and as far as I remember every one else I have seen the probe is in the water pump housing, either below and driver side of the T-Stat or, on top of the water pump, just behind passenger sideish of the T-stat housing. there is also another I belive in the head that sets off the engine temp lite, on the right of dash lite panel.

some have two ports on the water pump, some have one, if the truck only had one, then the P.O prolly took out the probe and put in the aftermarket gauge in its place.

I think Dieselrod is correct. I dont know about 97 but 94 1/2 to 96 has the temp sending unit on top the water pump (screwed into the water pump) that goes to the gauge. The other is the high temp warning light.
The OEM temp sensor screws into the big hole and a single wire connects to it.

Last post didnt work.

krija, there is only one temp sending unit in the stock setup that i know of. ITs on the top of the waterpump. Like dieselrod said, some pumps have two holes and some only have one. But the sensor with one wire goes in one hole. THe other one is called a "overheat warning switch" and is located right below the alternator (according to Tec. manual) and operates the overheat light in the instrument panel.
