I am trying to recall - aren't there two bronze colored links that match the two dots on the gears ? It has been a few years. However if my memory serves me correct I believe the same to be true on the 223.
There should be a dot on each gear. On the crank gear if key is at ~2 o-clock the dot should be at 3 o-clock and on the cam key way at 7 o-clock dot at 3 o-clock there should be 12 pins in the chain between the two marks.
Per the shop manual, the timing marks on the gears face to the right, oil filter side, and must have 12 pins between marks. The timing marks are small dots on the gears. If you want I can scan a pic from the manual and email it.
