I have a 1997 V6 4.0 Ranger automatic, a problem just started occuring with it and I'm pretty worried about it. Everytime I stop the truck it starts to jerk a little then starts boging down and starts to die before I give it gas. I drove it home from california about a week ago and just the other day it started doing this. My check engine light has been on but the guy I bought it from had it on for 2 years and it never affected the truck for him. I dont have the exact code but he said it was running lean. Any ideas what this could be?
i would start by pulling codes. this will help in finding or atleast pointing the way to what part(s) are failing. or you can shotgun parts under the hood and hope this fixes it.lol seriuosly i would get codes first.
So I took my truck down to Ford and had them run a engine test on it. They said I need a new intake manifold, purge valve and flow sensor. The parts are not that expensive but the labor is what makes it so expensive. So how hard is it to install these parts?
well if you want to do it yourself and save money labor Kudos to you! seriously though i would get a good manuel for this. like a chiltons or an equal shop manuel that covers everything about your truck and gives specs on bolt torque ratings and what not. they are step by step manuels and usually are easy to fallow and understand. and they cost about 20 dollars or so.
If your not to sure on how to do it sometimes it's better to take it to the stealership,at least it should be done right?(hopefully)if not keep bringing it back until they get it right.you could end up spending more money trying to do it yourself?
I would suggest trying it yourself. You need to have Autozone pull the codes. None of that is paticularly hard to do, but yes you'll need a Chilton's or Hayne's shop manual.
Did they say you need a new intake manifold or the gasket, the gasket is a common problem, see the link in the tech info thread at the top of this forum.
well i also recomend doing it yourself. there is no greater satifaction then doing it. Plus if you are really into working on your truck you will be doing it sometime or later. SO migh as well get a head start. Also save your broken parts just incase you want to ever port or polish the intake yourself you have a set to practice on.
