i have a 1997 ford explorer 4.0L. replaced the head gaskets and had the heads machined and cracked checked, they said there is no cracks. replaced the thermostat and rad cap as well. while you drive you will get a heat temp. change from the vents and when i let it idle with the rad cap on the upper rad hose looses heat and build pressure and after a few min the pressure decreases and the hose gets really hot. there is nothing going into the overflow tank, it does not over heat and did a check to see if combustion gases are still getting in the system by doing the check with blue fluid, did not detecting anything, not sure why the pressure is building and then decreasing that fast with a closed system and having the heat from the dash vents change so fast? the temp guage will move from just below half way mark on the guage to just over half way for a second before moving back down below half, i replaced the head gaskets due to combustion gases getting into the cooling system and found heads warped and bad gaskets. any suggestions.
If I'm understanding you correctly, the engine doesn't run hot it just fluctuates in temperature rapidly and replacing the head gaskets hasn't helped any? Or did this problem start after the head gaskets were replaced?
Did you notice this rapid heat change before you replaced the thermostat, and it hasn't changed any since? What temp thermostat are you using?
Have you had the radiator flow tested to make sure you don't have any blockage?
