Engine mods required with EGR removed.

I recently replaced the stock intake and 2150 Motorcraft with an Edelbrock 2171 non-EGR intake manifold and Edelbrock 4 barrel carb rejetted/metering rods for high altitude. Air Pump is also removed, and other than adding a new double roller timing chain set and dual exhaust, the 1980 F-350 400 4x4 auto is stock with 87,000 miles.

What should I do now regarding the timing and stock distributor that, at present, are set to EGR operating specs? I have read on this forum about changing the springs and weights in the distributor, but it seems as though that is pretty much a hit or miss solution. Is there an aftermarket vacuum advance distributor that will work well with the non-EGR stock engine? And if so, what what would be ideal timing numbers for the non-EGR setup? Any other suggestions?

Not sure that I can answer your question, but I was going to just pick up one of the $100 ebay HEI specials:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/50K-429-460-351C-351M-Ford-HEI-Distributor-3yr_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ33690QQitemZ8016321 926QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW

I've heard fairly good reviews of this particular distributor with vacuum advance.

Anyone have good or bad experiences with these? I'm not quite sure what the difference is between these generic units and the $300 MSD units.

Better yet, here's a whole kit from mad dog:

I was unable to get the above link to open, but if I knew who or what mad dog is, I might be able to see what the HEI kit includes...

Do these distributors connect to the stock "computer" control module located on the driver's side wheel housing? Or do the HEI distributors operate independent of the module and thus, the stock control module can be eliminated along with the stock coil?

Sorry about that. Not sure why the links got screwed up...

For the first link (just the distributor), search for item # 8015428565

For the complete kit, search for item # 8015037836

Let me know what you think...I'm trying to decide whether to buy the kit...

The complete kit, item # 8015037836, seems to be something for high performance applications. My engine is stock with 8.5 to 1 or less compression and is driven primarily at altitudes between 4,500 and 8,000 feet.

I am essentually just trying to compensate for the removal of both the EGR and AIR systems from the engine and produce the best compromise between performance and fuel economy.

Is the Accel Blueprint distributor a possibility? Spec sheet indicates that it is a direct replacement for the original distributor with the same connectors, but would that mean that the vacuum advance is curved for EGR as well?
