bought a 79 F-250 4x4 to plow with, I trailered it home since the owner said
it had brake problems. I opened up the master cylinder and found the small
resivoir empty(back brakes) I filled the master cylinder up and tried pumping
the pedal to see if i can find a leak, and the pedal just travels, Should i start
with the wheel cylinders?? With the master cylinder being empty in one resivoir for over a year should i assume its toast?
I tend to be overly carefull when it comes to brakes (if there is such a thing). If in doubt - replace it. I'd replace the master and both wheel cylinders. And that would be a good time to consider rear shoes and new rear brake springs. It's cheaper/easier/faster to do it right the first time, rather than have to redo it.
Also, while you have the MC off, pull the vacuum brake booster and make sure it's not full of brake fluid. When I've had MC reservoirs emptying, the seals on the MC piston were bad and leaking into the booster.
