Hey everyone, i am new to this forum. i own a 2000 excursion with 7.3 psd. i recently noticed coolant on my driveway and proceeded to investigate. i did find a small crack in my coolant tank and replaced it for 70 bucks! however, the leak has gotten worse and several have told me to replace the h20 pump and others say it's probably overflowing. i am not a mechanic, nor do i pretend to be. i am asking for yall's opinions and help. i did find a lockwasher in the driveway one day and that has puzzled the hell out of me where that came from. later.
I started seeing coolant in my driveway as well. Turned out to be a bad o-ring on the lower radiator hose tube at the water pump. You might also want to check the weep hole on the water pump for signs of a leak, would indicate pump is pretty much shot. Other than that, check all your hoses for cracks and security.
welcome aboard adamritch ... many times when winter sets in, you will find that there are hose clamps that need to be snugged up. You may also want to check the weep hole in the very bottom of the water pump neck. (if you lay under the radiator and look up with a flash light, you will see the drip just behind where the impeller shaft goes into the water pump housing.) The fan usually blows the coolant leak all over the place, so pay attention.
Leaks can be a pain but the good thing about them is that you can usually find them. But you've just got to do some CSI like tracing back of the fluid to the source.
Thanks folks. I havent had time to actually investigate the leak due to work and stuff. I just noticed about 10 mins ago the leak itself. it's dripping right off of the lip of the bottom most pulley. Any ideas as to where the leak may be originating? Should I go ahead and try to tighten the pump bolts in the morning?
