computer codes. differences?

im in need of a 5.8l ecm. the truck i pulled the motor out of no longer exists so i cant get the ecm outta it or get the code. i went to auto zone and looked up my ecm and there are 7 different ecm's to choose for the same year. can i just pick one and have it work? or should i pick the latest one to come out that year, cause from my understanding ford updated the programs threw out the year

I would try the latest version. It should work OK. What year did the engine come out of?

As long as it is a speed density computer to match your speed density (non-mass air) set-up, you should be ok.

The transmission needs to match the computer as well. An E4OD computer will throw all kinds of codes if it is in a stick shift truck, and vice versa, if you have a stick shift computer in a E4OD truck, the transmission won't work properly.

91 would be OBD I and most code readers read OBD II which was standard in 96 but some started using it in 94. Smme of the better OBD II readers will read OBD I with adaptor cables but a lot of them will not.
