im in need of a 5.8l ecm. the truck i pulled the motor out of no longer exists so i cant get the ecm outta it or get the code. i went to auto zone and looked up my ecm and there are 7 different ecm's to choose for the same year. can i just pick one and have it work? or should i pick the latest one to come out that year, cause from my understanding ford updated the programs threw out the year
The transmission needs to match the computer as well. An E4OD computer will throw all kinds of codes if it is in a stick shift truck, and vice versa, if you have a stick shift computer in a E4OD truck, the transmission won't work properly.
91 would be OBD I and most code readers read OBD II which was standard in 96 but some started using it in 94. Smme of the better OBD II readers will read OBD I with adaptor cables but a lot of them will not.
