I have a new to me 2000 SD CC Lariat. When I turn all the way to the left or all the way to the right there is a strange thump, like the tire is flat. The VIN sticker in the door says tire size should be 235 85R16, but the previous owner put on 265 75R16's. Can this size difference be causing this? I am thinking of going back to stock size. Thanks.
This thump is in sequence with the tire rotating? If so, it is the auto hub(s). It is not related to the tire size. I'm running LT305's and had the thumping only when turning. The driver's side auto hub was shot, a common problem on the SuperDutys. After a new set of manual hubs no more thumping noise.
If you're on a budget, E-Bay. If not, the dealer for about $300 EACH. Changing them is a snap, about 5-10 minutes each. Or switch to manual hubs and be done with it.
Oh no... I noticed a thumping tonight on the drive home. Kinda hard to hear over the PSD, but it's there.
Varies with tire rotation speed. '04 Lariat F350 longbed auto. 25K miles. 4WD ESOF. Stock tire size. Sounds like a plastic thump now. Disappears when cornering. Sounds like it's coming from the left front.
Not in the mood to spend $600 on this. What's up with these hubs?
