beer just tastes funky when stored in plastic. it just is not the same. miller sells their beer in plastic bottles now and they taste worse than their regular beer in glass. just my thoughts.

I cap glass bottles. Unfortunately, Huber Bock no longer comes in the heavy, returnable-style bottles, they come in the lightweight screw-off type (not usable for homebrew). Plus, the only place locally that sold Huber went out of business a while back. So now I have to make do with import bottles that don't have the twist-off caps. At least I have an adequate supply for now, until I can afford to start kegging my brew. From all I've read, that's the way to go.

Plastic tends to carry over aromas from the contents. Ever smelled your brew bucket - even weeks after a batch is done? How can you cap a plastic bottle - you'd have to reuse the screwcaps. I do homemade root beer in 2 liter bottles - they hold carbonation pretty well. If you think you could sanitize plastic, it might turn out okay. You'd have to use a chemical sanitizer rather than rely on heat. Still, if you put a pilsner or hefeweisen in a plastic bottle that had a hoppy IPA, it might carry over some residual flavors.

Sierraben, I have been an all-grain brewer for 11 years and a brewer for even longer, and have never used plastic bottles. Never had a reason too, beer bottles seem to grow like mushrooms in my garage

That being said, you can buy new PET style bottles and use them, like thousands of guys do. They are even legal for most competitions.. I would not trust them for many re-uses, tho, for the reasons the guys above gave.

I keg 4 gal.s and bottle the fifth gal. for competititon out of most of my batches, and I have bottled literally hundreds of bottles, always used glass twist-top bottles and NEVER had a problem.

So go ahead if you like, try the plastic bottles and see if you like it. Its all good... its just beer,, not rocket science LOL

I've never had problems with standard caps on twist off glass bottles

My brother uses plastic bottles at a local U-Brew. He found the hardest thing was tracking down all the empty bottles for re-use. They get cleaned chemically, and he had to give a deposit, otherwise he'd lose it. That said, it was cheaper for him to use plastic bottles, as the glass would have put him over his budget. I dunno. Different strokes I guess.

A buddy of mine does glass bottles. He bought a bunch of Corona and kept the empties, then reused them at a different U-Brew, then refilled them with their Corona formula. Tastes pretty close I think.
