Its a 2000 mountaineer 5.0 all wheel drive. it has had what can only be explained by as a flat spot very first thing in the morning on the very first take off. but now under medium acceleration it bucks and surges in all gears as long as its a moderate accel and quits once the vehicle isnt pulling itself. and WOT feels like it is missing even kinda sounds like a faint gas ping at WOT. what could cause this? It just started all of a sudden pretty much. tranny, front wheel drive sensors, fuel / fuel filter?. and the tranny fluid is full and clean. thanks in advance.
Shane
Sounds like an air/fuel mixture issue. Dont know enough about the 5.0 (4.9) V8's but on the V6, mine did that (my old 94 anhow) when the MAS/MAF was dying (beyond the help of being cleaned). Lukily it was covered under extended warr. since it was RELIGIOUSLY maintained by the dealer to a T.
Do the v8's have knock sensors? Might also be the O2 sensor(s). Are you getting a SES/CEL? If so, what codes? Any mods? Last time you checked/replaced the air filter?
Just trying to get more info as others with more clue will likely ask it anyhow. More info, the faster and more reliable your responses will be.
replaced air filter 3 months ago and is still in good shape. SES/CEL? whats that? the engine light isnt on so I havnt had the codes checked, I figured there wouldnt be any if the light wasnt on. and also I didnt figure it would be the o2 sensors since the light wasnt on. could these thing go bad without turning the light on?
Agreed...with OBDII, you have soft and hard set codes. Soft set codes clear after so many miles of no other faults, hard set codes throw the Check Engine Light/Service Engine Soon. Most cars (cant say with an absolute) throw a solid CEL/SES for emissions related where it fails after x amount of times. Blinking means pull over and shut'r down now....I have seen where a soft code is thrown, cleared, thrown, cleared, etc...and not know about it till emmissions testing where they fail you for a failed/failing <insert break the bank part here> *grumble*...you can get laptop software and a program from various sources online. I have one for my VW, but use a friends handheld scanner for my other vehicles (VW throws codes left and right..mostly stupid stuff...loose gas cap, glow plug harness suspect, etc)...
Now that I have stepped back into the mix with another Explorer (1994) I need to find out if I can get laptop software and a dongle..as it's so much easier than the crossed wires method...but for my Truck (250HD 7.3) I need a scanner as well...too bad there arent any (that I have found) that have the old OBDI and OBDII dongles included.
Ok, so I had the codes pulled, the light finally came on. it gives a very vague multiple cylinder misfire. I wouldnt think that multiple plugs or wires would go bad all at once so I changed the fuel filter and cleaned the mas and no change in it. could it be the cam position sensor? and if so it sets in there like a distributor, if you loosen the bolt can you advance and retard your timing like a dist? and if replaced does it have to be put in exaclty the same position?
I replaced the plugs and all is good now, I have never had plugs give out on me so fast. but they were the oem plugs I think. so at 60000 they were ready. thanks for all the help.
