Hello everyone, my father just bought a 1991 Ranger with the 4.0 liter. It originally had a 4.0 liter, but the previous owner put a newer one in it of the same style I believe. Well there are a few noticeable things that we noticed. First, it sounds like there is a miss in the motor. Not too obvious, but we can both notice it. Second, by the passenger exhaust manifold it sounds like there is an exhaust leak, but we can't find a hole, crack, or any air escaping. Lastly, there is a squeak/squeal coming from the front of the motor. It sounds like it's coming from the pulley that the top of is exposed in the middle of the motor. I didn't happen to see what the pulley attached to, but it's the only one I saw with the top open. Any help is appreciated, thanks.
well you might have a dead cylinder so check all your ignition componets. Cap, rotor, wires, plugs, ect. Also make sure that your plkugs are sucure. i put on new plugs and found out that i didn't size them right and one would pop off when i was driving. the sqeeling can mean a worn belt. Check for fraying, tears and tension.
OK I cleaned the MAF with PB blaster cause it's all I had handy. It seemed to ork fine. Next, I pulled the throttle body and cleaned that out with some carb cleaner. The two things combined seemed to improve it a little. I've heard of cleaning the IAC, but searching on here and google has yielded no write ups on how to clean it. Anyone reccommend anything in particular? Is there anything else you can think of? Oh by the way, I pulled each plug wire off the plug and shot some dielectrical grease in there for reassurance that they were on tighly. And my father took it to work this morning for the first time about 35 miles all highway and he said when he was almost to work, the check engine light flashed once and then stayed out the rest of the way any thoughts on that? Thanks, Austynn.
read the codes, OBDI system with connector under hood.
will store codes without CEL locking on, light indicates a failure..
PB Blaster has an oil/solvent base, will contaminate MAF sensor and TB, clean only with FI, TB cleaner or electrical contact cleaner, brake cleaner is too caustic and will damage fragile MAF elements and MAF anti friction coating.
exhaust manifold to header pipe has no gasket, only a compression bell metal to metal seal, may have 1 broken or loose bolt.
sounds like pulley for water pump, take off belt and spin pulley to check for any roughness or looseness in bearing, if rough or loose=replace pump
check condition of belt, any cracks or glazing=replace, try some non slip belt dressing
4L IAC is aluminum case device mounted on side of MAF, affects only idle, Ford in service info says replace only-not cleanable, but many on forum have some success cleaning, pull electrical plug off at idle, engine should die or drop rpm if working correctly, supplies most of air supply at idle.
OK thanks for the suggestions. Tonight I only had time to pull the MAF and I'm going to have it soak in white vinegar for about 9 hours. I read that this is one of the best methods. Glad there are people out there to watch myself for me. : )
