advance problem?

This is probably a stupid question, but anyways. My truck is really hard to start, i think i have a vaccuum leak or something, but i can't find out where it's coming from. Before I never used to have to pump the gas more than once to get it to start, now i have to pump it 10-15 times. It died about 6 months ago, the coil shorted out. So I replaced that, changed the clutch while it was sitting. MY accelerator pump started leaking fuel so I changed that as well. It's only a 2bbl... I also took my distributor apart, inspected the points and cleaned out the dirt and stuff that had accumulated inside. My Vaccuum advance works and I didn't take the mechanical advance apart. However, when I rev it, and it gets up around 3600-4000 RPM, it sputters real bad and sounds like it's going to die. Also, it backfired really bad and shot flames about 2 feet out of the carb. I put a timing light on it and did the base timing, but if it's backfiring out of the carb, something's gotta be wrong, which leads me to believe my advancing isn't working..........I don't know, i'm stumped. I should probably just take it to a shop, get the carb tuned and the timing done.

It's a 351 Cleveland. It's the original dist. I used to have an ACCEl dual points dist. in there , but it was pretty worn out. The original seemed to be in better shape. The Cap and rotor are pretty much brand new. Like I said I took the distributor apart. There was a little rust on the mounting plate for the points, but i sanded all that off.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 28-Feb-02 AT 00:39 AM (EST)]1)Look inside the cap for carbon arcing between contacts.

2)Remove the distributor from the engine and give the shaft a *side to side* test.
It's possible the shaft bushings are worn and causing an orbital turn of the shaft, causing mis-firing.
3)Do a Dwell test to see what that is.
4)Check for Cam lube on the rotor Cam and for an extremely worn rubbing block which affects spark.
5)Replace the points AND the condensor, set to spec.
6)Reset the timing to spec.
7) Run the engine in a Dark area at night and watch for sparking in the sparkplug wires.(coil to cap > Cap to plugs)
8)Later we can do a Coil resistance check.

Once these are done we'll go after the fuel system.

The cap has no carbon tracking, the old dual points dist. had a lot of slop compared to the ACCEL dist. that's why i put the original back in. I don't have access to an oscilloscope or a "snap on vantage" right now maybe in a week or two to see what the actual dwell and firing line and time for each cylinder is. Maybe once i get some money. i'm planning on changing the points, condensor is a good idea. Timing will be set to base timing. I will watch for corona at night, i know i need new plug wires. i'm drunk so i might not make sense, bare with me
