I'm replacing the crank bearings with the motor still in. So far so good, with two exceptions. First, there is no oil hole on the #4 journal, so I couldn't remove the old upper. All the uppers so far have looked fine, so I just left it in and replaced the worn lower.
Secondly, I can't seem to get the thrust bearing cap off. The bolts are out but the cap isn't moving. Is there any special trick to this? Unlike the other caps, there is a little metal tab sticking out between the cap and the block on the driver's side. I don't know what it is.
OK, I did manage to get it off. The suspicious little cylinder is an alignment dowel. I put a drift punch in the bearing cap bolt hole and the cap came off.
Some of the upper bearing shells have been really difficult to replace. I bent two trying to get them in, so I had to pull them out and start over. And there's a chance that they ended up a little bent anyways.
